Serve Guernsey County as a 911 Dispatcher

The Guernsey County Sheriff’s Office is seeking dedicated professionals to serve as full-time 911 Dispatchers. Dispatchers play a critical role in public safety by serving as the vital communication link between citizens, law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and other emergency responders. This position offers the opportunity to work alongside a professional team while making a direct and lasting impact on the safety and well-being of the citizens of Guernsey County.

Your Role as a Guernsey County 911 Dispatcher

911 Dispatchers perform a wide range of emergency communications and public safety support duties in both routine and high-stress situations. Responsibilities include:

  • Answering emergency (911) and non-emergency business telephone lines
  • Gathering information from callers and determining the appropriate response
  • Prioritizing incidents and dispatching law enforcement, fire, and EMS resources
  • Monitoring and operating radio communications systems
  • Entering, updating, and maintaining information within computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems
  • Providing information and assistance to citizens, partner agencies, and public safety personnel
  • Monitoring officer safety and responder status during incidents
  • Coordinating communications between public safety agencies and partner organizations
  • Maintaining accurate records, logs, and documentation of calls and incidents
  • Assisting the public with requests for information and public safety services
  • Representing the Sheriff’s Office with professionalism, courtesy, and integrity

Who We’re Looking For

We are seeking committed individuals ready to serve in a full-time public safety communications capacity. Candidates must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Possess a valid Ohio driver’s license
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening
  • Pass a comprehensive background investigation and agency screening
  • Be capable of remaining calm and making sound decisions in high-pressure situations
  • Demonstrate strong communication, multitasking, and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and the ability to work as part of a team

Previous dispatch, emergency communications, public safety, customer service, military, or related experience is preferred but not required.

Training and Support

911 Dispatchers receive ongoing training and development, including:

  • Orientation to GCSO policies, procedures, and operational standards
  • Public safety communications training
  • Computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system training
  • Law enforcement, fire, and EMS dispatch procedures
  • Emergency communications and incident management training
  • State-mandated telecommunications and continuing education training

Uniforms and equipment are provided in accordance with agency policy.

Work Schedule and Commitment

This is a full-time position requiring flexibility and commitment. Dispatchers may work:

  • Rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Scheduled communications center assignments
  • Mandatory overtime assignments as needed
  • Emergency staffing assignments during critical incidents, severe weather events, and disasters
